Channel Four is not commissioning another series of the award-winning drama series about young lesbians in Brighton. Sugar Rush, made by production company Shine, will not continue on the channel despite its popularity with viewers and critics alike. Last November Sugar Rush won an International Emmy in America and two Stonewall Awards for Broadcaster of the Year.
Speaking exclusively to LoveGirls Johnny Capps, Sugar Rush producer and co-creator, said: "We were surprised and disappointed at Channel 4's decision not to recommission Sugar Rush, especially after its ratings and critical success. We certainly had lots of ideas of where to take the next series and it was sad not to be able to finish Kim and Sugar's story properly." He added the reason Channel 4 gave for failing to recommission the series was because the broadcaster "did not have a scheduling slot for it".
A Channel 4 spokeswoman has been quoted as saying there were never plans for a third or fourth series of Sugar Rush, insisting: "It was concluded at end of the second series because we felt the girls' story had run its course." The second series ended with Sugar moving into the flat Kim shares with her new girlfriend Saint.
Olivia Hallinan, the actress who played Kim, told LoveGirls she and the rest of the cast were very disappointed at the decision: "It is such a shame because we are all up for it."
She added that even though she was initially daunted about playing a lesbian character, she soon found it rewarding. "Sugar Rush is important for young women who are lesbian or bi. I used to get so many letters from girls about the show because they could relate to it."
We have an exclusive interview this week with Olivia (Kim) and Lenora (Sugar) from Sugar Rush. Both girls will be reading your comments about the show being cancelled and will each select a member to win a signed Sugar Rush Box Set. So girls ... how do you feel about the show being cancelled?
