Channel 4 Cancels Sugar Rush

by Anabel Unity Sale

Channel Four is not commissioning another series of the award-winning drama series about young lesbians in Brighton. Sugar Rush, made by production company Shine, will not continue on the channel despite its popularity with viewers and critics alike. Last November Sugar Rush won an International Emmy in America and two Stonewall Awards for Broadcaster of the Year.

Speaking exclusively to LoveGirls Johnny Capps, Sugar Rush producer and co-creator, said: "We were surprised and disappointed at Channel 4's decision not to recommission Sugar Rush, especially after its ratings and critical success. We certainly had lots of ideas of where to take the next series and it was sad not to be able to finish Kim and Sugar's story properly." He added the reason Channel 4 gave for failing to recommission the series was because the broadcaster "did not have a scheduling slot for it".

A Channel 4 spokeswoman has been quoted as saying there were never plans for a third or fourth series of Sugar Rush, insisting: "It was concluded at end of the second series because we felt the girls' story had run its course." The second series ended with Sugar moving into the flat Kim shares with her new girlfriend Saint.

Olivia Hallinan, the actress who played Kim, told LoveGirls she and the rest of the cast were very disappointed at the decision: "It is such a shame because we are all up for it."

She added that even though she was initially daunted about playing a lesbian character, she soon found it rewarding. "Sugar Rush is important for young women who are lesbian or bi. I used to get so many letters from girls about the show because they could relate to it."

We have an exclusive interview this week with Olivia (Kim) and Lenora (Sugar) from Sugar Rush. Both girls will be reading your comments about the show being cancelled and will each select a member to win a signed Sugar Rush Box Set. So girls ... how do you feel about the show being cancelled?

I think that is complete and utter crap that channel 4 just didn't have a slot for it, of all the boring meaningless stupid programmes they have on channel 4 they finally had a good thing going with sugar rush it was witty and alot of people realated to it or helped people to understand what its like for us. This is the second time this has happened as they cancelled Queer as Folk Uk after its second series oh well what can ya do!! BRING BACK SUGAR RUSH!!!! lol

well, I am a boy... I mean I am not gay or something, but Sugar Rush made think of many situations and the day by day of a girl who starts to live and found herself inside a world that she even know she could deal with, but at the same time... she knew what she wanted about life. And I think this kind show Žd never, I say never ends... a very good writer and director. in my opinion THE SHOW COULD NEVER ENDS! SUGAR RUSH RULES!!!!!!

Hi!
Without taking into account the issue of establishing a stone by God, which he won't be able to pick up, how do you think, may be something in this world, what can God never see?

Hi, I should not really be answering this as I'm a boy, but I absolutely adored BOTH series of the show. I know I do not stand alone either and I'm currently organising a worldwide petition on FACEBOOK to raise awareness to C4 abouts our demand for a 3rd series and *hopefully* they will bring the greatest-show-ever back to us! Love and peace Sam x

I am big fan of skins. But also a huge fan of sugar rush. I think the most shoking thing about channel fours decision is that they kept it hush hush as if not to upset anyone.
I think it's a real shame they cut a story line short. but obviously they don't really care about the viewers and it's the ratings that matter.

I know girls who are gay , straight and bi who all love this programme. it's a shame because it's the only programme on british tv that i could watch as a 16 year old bisexual girl and think to myself im not completley barmy and bonkers.

Thankyou to the creators because although you may not be carrying on for another season . You have changed my life, in the smallest of ways , every episode was a learning curve.

Thankyou

Terrible news!!!!!

I can't believe they cancelled SR!!!

I really wanna know if Kim and Sugar were going to be together or sth.!!

Besides, here in Argentina neither "Sugar Rush" nor "Sweet" were published, so I can even find out there!!

I hope the people from ch4 realize what a silly thing they've done and bring our beloved show back!!!

Ok, I had no idea the show had finished. I'm no longer a teenager, I'm 25 and to be honest, despite the age difference I felt completely identified with Kim, with my fears and my doubts. This show was one of the things that helped me not only come out to my familiy and friends but also to come out to myself, to realize what I was and I wanted. It's really disapointing that they cut it..bad news... Lesbian argentinian wolrd, it's a bad bad day today for us...they've taken away one of our only quality sensitive and real lesbian series...we are allowed to cry...Sugar Rush was for us our own lives...

aww i was so gutted when i read this, i relate so much to kim's character because i had a friend like sugar, and i had a crush on her and my other best friend, who was a boy. And they both fucked me round for laughs behind my back. So when sugar rush came out it was like me and kim were one person because i wasn'tsure wether i was bisexual or straight, and me and my crushes on mates didn't help.

Kim coming out to her friends and family was an incentive to me, and i also got over the crushes and realised i deserved better than them, so i moved on to get a girlfriend, and finally came out to everryone that i was lesbian.

i just hope younger people who get to teenage years watch this, and if they're in the same position then this dvd will helpp:)

i just would like to thank the author :DDD

andi hope maybe ch4 will commission back SR :DDDDDDD
