What is Santa bringing you this Christmas? Angelina Jolie? Peace on earth? Or how about a calendar featuring 24 lesbian Londoners dressed to the nines? While we would love the first and second options, it is more likely we will get our hot little hands on number three than find Angelina under our Christmas tree clutching a white dove. Which is where the I Love London Girls 2008 calendar comes in.
Created and produced by a lesbian team, lead by London-based photographer Nadia Attura and stylist Mercury, the I Love London Girls calendar portrays 24 real life gay women in 12 historical London scenes. It starts with January depicting a sizzling Roman empress and a Celtic queen, and ends with December showing modern day lesbian love with two women lying on the pool table in the Candy Bar, Soho. In between January and December we also get to see a lesbian take on the Victorian period, the votes for women campaign and the 1970s, among others.

Nadia Attura says she was inspired to do the calendar because she wanted to mark lesbians’ place in London’s history. "Let’s face it, women have been getting it on for generations! I think people are now beginning to recognise that there is no single stereotype of ‘a lesbian’, and there never really was," she says. "I just wanted people to see what I see; gay girls in London are beautiful, witty and sexy women."
The calendar is undeniably beautiful. It is glossy, the costumes are amazing (I particularly like February’s Elizabethan scene and September’s butch femme take on the 1960s James Bond), the styling of the shots and attention to detail are superb, and the models themselves all look beautiful. It is quite a feat to pull such a calendar together – nothing like this has existed before - and also involve some of the London scene’s well-known faces. Women who posed for the calendar include Naj and Shabby from the lesbian punk band Voodoo Hussy and Anna, the winner of Role Model 2007.
My only criticism is that the calendar may not appeal to all lesbian and bi women. Although the women in the calendar are different ages, body sizes, ethnicities, have different styles they all look very stylised. For some folk this may be a problem, for others it won’t. Whatever your view, I Love London Girls 2008 is changing the way lesbians are seen and view themselves. And this can only be a good thing!
You can buy the calendar from Amazon, or through Paypal for £12.99 + P&P. For more information about the calendar or models check out http://www.ilovelondongirls.com
