"Uh Huh Her" is the hugely successful LA based band and brainchild of musician / actress Leisha Hailey and musician Camilla Gray. While rockin' through the UK on their sold out tour these lovely ladies were gracious enough to give LoveGirls an exclusive interview.
Leisha is well known for her previous band, "The Murmurs," as well as for the role of "Alice" on Showtime's hit TV show "The L Word". Camilla was part of the group "Mellowdrone" and has worked as a session musician for the likes of Melissa Auf Der Maur, Dr. Dre, and Kelly Osbourne.
The gals were a little tired after a night of partying in Soho, after their gig at Shepherds Bush Empire, but they still managed to be gorgeous and charming for our chat!
LoveGirls: How has being on tour been treating you so far?
Leisha: Well it just started the other day but it's been great! We're still on the fun part.
LoveGirls: Even though you have just started are you finding it hard to be away from your friends and loved ones?
Camilla: No. It's been fine; big tours can be a little too much sometimes but this one has been like a little vacation.
Leisha: Obviously you always miss the people you love, but we are still at the beginning so it's all good!
LoveGirls: Are you both living the rock and roll lifestyle or are you back at your hotel rooms early, all tucked up.
Leisha: Meaning what? [Grins]
LoveGirls: Meaning, are you out and about or in bed early?
Camilla: Well, yes we have been out. We met a really cool chick from a band called "The Baddies" and she took us to this club but we didn't know where we were.
Leisha: That's the fun part about traveling to all these cities, you actually get to meet people and they get to show you their town; and that's the best way to see it. When you travel like us it's kind of festive!
LoveGirls: Leisha, your success in the band may well eclipse your acting career. How do you feel about that?
Leisha: I'm ready for anything. So what ever comes my way - I'm ok!
LoveGirls: If you had to choose between acting and music, which would you go for?
Leisha: See that's the thing – I don't think I will ever be in that position. I don't think you just have to pick one thing in life. I like just being an artist. There are things other then singing and acting that I like to do and are just as gratifying to me. I feel like I'm on this earth one time and I'm going to make the most of it.
LoveGirls: Have you had to sacrifice one thing for the other so far?
Leisha: Not yet. I surround myself, business wise, with people who have my best interest [in mind], and are communicating with each other. I just kind of sit back and show up when I have to. Actually - I don't just sit back - I work really hard. It's about them being able to schedule me.
LoveGirls: Leisha, what came first: acting or singer? Did you always know you wanted to both?
Leisha: I always did both but I studied acting, so that was my plan and that is what I was going to pursue. Music came about as a hobby that turned into something new; and I just use them both as an outlet.
LoveGirls: Camilla, this is the first time you have been a front woman in a band. Is that scary?
Camilla: Yes! But it's exciting!
LoveGirls: Did you have any second thoughts about it?
Camilla: I like to do things that scare me. I'm glad I'm doing it and not running the other way like I've been doing for a while. I enjoy the challenge!
LoveGirls: Have you experienced anything, being a front woman, which you did not anticipate?
Camilla: For me it's difficult to enjoy, because I tend to over think things and want everything to be perfect instead of just going out there and enjoying myself.
LoveGirls: Much of "I See Red" was recorded in your house: your bathroom and bedroom. How did you get it to sound so slick?
Camilla: I use this music software that is for recording. I just got really into it a couple of years ago and I began producing things and that's how we did it!
Leisha: It is all pretty much electronic. Not a lot of live recordings - that way it's very crispy and easy.
LoveGirls: what can you tell us about the new record?
Leisha: Well, it's called Common Reaction [which is] actually a title of one of the songs and it sort of sums up the whole record.
Camilla: it's very eclectic. It ranges from ballads – to more energetic stuff – to more rocking kind of stuff with lots of elements to it.
LoveGirls: Both of you write the songs. Is there any musical conflict or do you bounce off each other?
Leisha: There is no conflict. We both have different backgrounds and that's where the sound comes from … right? [Looks to Camilla]
Camilla: [laughs]
Camilla: It's interesting because I normally work alone. Working with Leisha brought a new effect to the music and we have to balance ideas off each other. To write lyrics for someone else is also interesting if you're not coming from the same place and you're trying to make that work - but it's fun!
LoveGirls: Leisha, you have had success before with "The Murmurs," how did you go from that to this?
Leisha: That was like many, many years ago. I had stopped that band a while ago and I had years off where I took a break and missed what I was doing. I wanted to start a band and I didn't know how to go about doing that; and I just figured that I would meet the right person or people at the right time and that is pretty much what happened.
LoveGirls: Camilla, you have worked with some big names, including Dr Dre, Busta Rhymes and Kelly Osborne who have you enjoyed working with the most?
Camilla: Honestly, I enjoyed working with all of them in different ways. One of the most exciting things was Dre because he is such a workaholic and I liked watching him work and we got along really well. And I got to be a part of the whole hip-hop thing for a while which was really interesting because that's so not what I would normally do! So it was fun to have a glimpse into that world.
LoveGirls: Anyone you didn't enjoy working with?
Camilla: No.
LoveGirls: Shame, so you cant give LoveGirls any gossip?
Camilla: I really cant. I have been really lucky and worked with people who have been great!
LoveGirls: You have had an incredible amount of success with "Uh Huh Her" in a relatively short time. What do you put that down to?
Leisha: We don't know really where it comes from – if it's from our musical backgrounds or what, but it's fun! We just have to show up for it that's all. It's going faster then we are - that's all.
LoveGirls: Are you ok with that?
Leisha: Yeah, it's different. We would love to have the luxury to sit around and write a record for months and months. But at the same time, because we have had to write the songs so quickly, and get our band together so quickly, those things are maintaining the excitement. Maybe that is something that would get lost if we sat around; or maybe we would over think too much.
Camilla: I definitely would, I tend to do that.
LoveGirls: I would imagine you have a few groupies who throw themselves at you. Is that annoying, or a perk of the job?
Leisha: For me that is the weird part. Yeah, that's the part that is not part of your daily life so when it happens its odd.
LoveGirls: Gay fans are known to be very loyal, but at the same time we can be a little intense. Have you had any bad experiences with fans where it's gotten a bit freaky?
Leisha: No. We're lucky. We have great fans and it's awesome that they're loyal! When you suck they still come back to see you the next day! When you're good you are happy to share that with them. That's what's cool about this; we are so new and if they have seen us from the beginning then they are going to see us through it all.
LoveGirls: How would describe your fans?
Leisha: Umm, definitely energetic, supportive, cool, cute, and fun!
