Simple question, but one I've always been interested in hearing people's answers to. Had a debate about this with an ex some years back. I should ask them again now and see if their answer has changed.

Edited it for you.

Do you really think they're equally as strong as each other? Care to elaborate? :)

Haha From other people's stories and experience it does seem like they are both equally strong. But personally for me, I never experienced hate the way I have experienced love. There were people I did hate, but it was to a certain degree, where as those I loved, I felt that there was never a limit to how much I loved them. I never think back or question why I loved them because it always felt right, where as those I hated, I usually felt guilty to have felt such contempt for them even though given the circumstances I had every right to feel such way about them.

Yeah, good answer Bilal  I agree with what you said. Along those lines, I think that hate can come and go more rapidly than love. For most people, it has a beginning and an end. You may not care to carry the hate anymore, maybe you don't see the person and the feeling subsides, or maybe you choose to forgive and deem it not necessary. It can be aggressive at the beginning, but can change quite quickly in given circumstances. Love on the other hand, in my opinion, is usually unyielding in nature. It can be especially so in the beginning when lust is involved (we all know this). You may argue that love can also change, yes, but maybe we love that person in a different way, non romantically. When I think of my life or the world ending, I don't think of those I may hate or have a grudge against. I think of those I love.

All right. I think love is ultimately stronger. I believe hate stems from love more often than not. Love a god; hate homosexuality or a certain act. Love a person; hate them for hurting you. Love an ideal; hate yourself (and/or others). Don't feel loved; hate yourself (and/or others). I don't think most hate would exist without love.

It's very easy to hate someone, casually you can just decide to hate someone even over something trivial.
The problem with hate is that it corrupts the soul, it feeds on your blackened insecurities and binds you forever to that despised object, ultimately it sucks the life out of you. It's also ultimately pointless because you can hate even when the subject is unaware, there is no exchange of energy.
So it's not that it is stronger, it's just that hate weakens it's host.

Love is hard,
that ache when you are parted from your lover, the acid memory of a lover now passed. It takes effort to carry love with you, it demands everything from you and greedily sucks even more, it insists that you feel pain at every step because she is not there.
Yet love is constantly renewing itself, you accept the pain because it brings such sublime joy and light to your life.
As such love will always be stronger because it gives it's host a reason to live.

Some people claim/believe that it is the strength of their love of a god that leads them to commit what others would see as a hateful act.

Yup, doesn't help that the texts were written during such blood thirsty times or confusingly juggled. There is a bit in the Koran about beheading your enemies, which then talks about freeing them. Which was it ? Of course the more excitable ones just pick the first bit...

I think being angry about a perceived slight against ones nominal God is really just being angry and looking for a goat to slay.

If you take away all the political, vanity, power seeking, war mongering, land acquisition, petty feuding and financial incentives to running a religion, there isn't a lot of reason left to be angry at anyone. Not likely to ever happen though :|
