People rave about it, its probably the most well known London venue, and i had never been so Friday night, against my better judement i decided to visit G-A-Y... We arrived there around 11pm and didnt have to queue to get in which was a good plus in my eyes.
Its a big place and unless you are there with people who have been before its very hard to find your way around. I felt a bit like a cattle in a cattle market most of the night. After being searched, pushed towards the till to pay my entry fee, wrist stamped and up the stairs to queue to put your coats then your in dire need of a drink. After negotiating which stairs took you to which bar i was utterly disgusted to find that they charge £3.20 for a CAN of carlsberg. There is a choice of two areas playing different music. The first larger area has a huge dancefloor and stages and plays classic 80's music, This is where we stayed by 1-2am it was packed out. The second smaller area plays more up to date music. It was full of gay and straight people all off their heads dancing and having a good time, which is great...as long as u didnt breathe in too hard. Yes the smoking ban has affected us all in more than one way, we are now bombarded by the smell of peoples body odour all night...nice!
Having to leave the club and stand in a tiny fenced off area outside everytime i wanted to smoke became irritating as did the fact that i had to be searched again upon re-entering the club But this isnt the clubs fault though i think they need to find a new way of dealing with the ban. Most of the staff were polite except for the cloakroom attendants who were rude as hell. When we left the club we went for that all important afterclub kebab, this is where my jaw hit the floor at £18 for two kebabs chips and a can of drink. Any time i mentioned the cost of things the only excuse i was offered was 'its london'.
All in all i had a good night but weighing up the huge costs of the drinks plus the fact of my travel there and back the next morning and takeaway shop prices i wont be going again any time soon when i could of had a better night closer to home and at half the cost, but if money isnt an object and your still young enough to enjoy that atmosphere then its worth a visit.
